A personal CNC Machine Tool for your Prototype?
Three D printers facilitate plastic prototypes making. However, if you must use steel, aluminum or titanium for your prototype, 3D printing process becomes more complex; printers and materials acquisition costs increase exponentially. You can always ask a supplier that has the required 3D or CNC (computer numerical control) equipment to manufacture your part. You may also acquire a “personal” (or desktop) CNC machine tool.
Presented at the New York World Maker Faire from September 26 to 27, 2015, the PCNC 440 machine tool from Tormach company has enabled many inventors and entrepreneurs to reconsider the use of this type of equipment that removes material instead of adding as do additive manufacturing equipment (3D printing).
At a base price of 4,950 USD, this personal CNC machine tool has external dimensions of 42 by 36 inches (106.7 by 91.4 cm), weighs 450 lb (204 kg) and is operated using a 120 volt outlet. It allows displacement of 10 x 10 x 6.25 inches in X, Y and Z axes (25.4 x 15.9 x 25.4 cm).
This machine tool is provided with an R8 spindle and may be equipped in 2016 with an optional power drawbar, automatic tool changer, and a fourth axis. Only drawback: the drawings must come from a CAD/CAM software and require machining knowledge … unnecessary for 3D printing.
